Mamavation Monday: Eating Slowly

I forgot to tell everyone last week that I have the pleasure of working with Pete Cohen, the Weightloss Guru, for the next 3 months!

So far, I have been working through the introduction and first steps of the program. I’m really excited about the tools that Cohen is giving us and teaching us to work with.

Dinner Plate with Spoon and ForkOne of the tools is to remember to eat slowly. This is one of my biggest problems. Aaron laughs at me all the time because I’m finished eating my dinner and staring at him while he seems to labor over his. When I tell him he eats too slowly, he says, “No, I just like to taste my food.”

I have tried to make a conscious effort to take a bite and set my fork down while I chew. I try to take sips of my drink (99% of the time, that’s water!) before taking another bite. I really do try. But Cohen makes a good point. If I scarf the food down, I’m not even giving my brain a moment to realize that I’m no longer hungry before I’m up and filling my plate with more!

So, slowing down is this week’s goal along with the rest:

* Drink my water! (I have not been good about this. Shame on me.)
* Continue the walking! (This one, I’m pretty darn good about!)
* Change my dessert. (This sounds weird, but I’m an ice cream/cake/cookies gal. I’m going to change my dessert to popcorn. I am a “must-have-dessert” kind of girl, so I think popcorn would be my safest bet.)
* Get this house CLEAN! (Enough said.)

Eating slowly is something that we all can do, but often forget about! My husband and I try to remind each other, but yes..it does allow for a longer dinner time, more conversation, and less food going into the mouth! Thank you for reminding me to be more diligent on that! That’s awesome that you get to worth with Pete for three months! Congrats to that! Have a good week.

Good point on the longer conversation and dinner! I end up running around the kitchen getting stuff done while my poor husband just sits there eating. I need to focus more on just hanging with him! :)

I’m so glad I saw your post on Pete because I’ve been checking my e-mail and haven’t seen the initial one with the login. I sent him an e-mail. I’ve been traveling all week so my e-mail checking has been hit or miss. I have the same problem eating slow. As a mother and a multi-tasker, it’s hard to concentrate on slowing down when there is so much to do. Have a great week!

Oh! Glad you sent an email. I had the same problem at first, but I got a response REALLY quickly. Good luck!

  3. That is awesome that you get to work with Pete for three months!! :) Very awesome! I need to slow down my eating too, I think I am trying to keep up with my kids and eat before they need something and my dinner is stone cold before I can come back to eat it.

    Have a great week!!

  4. Eating slowly, what a concept?! I think that is super hard as a mom, after all we need to be done because someone else needs us! LOL! I will have to try to remember that this week!

    Good luck with your goals!

  5. It funny how you say “eat slowly” because I really do eat slowly.. My husband makes fun of me all the time about it. Though it is true i don’t eat as much when i eat slower. have a great week.

Thanks, Marie! I’m going to really try to find a way to be conscious about it. I know I won’t be perfect, though!

  7. Sarah says:

I love the idea of putting the fork down in between bites. I often rush through dinner, too!

Eatting slowly is one of the reasons I got the Lapband, it reminds you when you start scarfing. Eeek. But it really does help. Try also chewing through the alphabet. Because you should be doing about 25 chews for each bite. Also try making your bites about the size of a dime or pea depending on your mouth.

Also think about changing your dessert to a piece of fruit. Try frozen bananas or banana ice cream. For me when I need a sweet this really works. But if a savory like pop corn will work for you then def go for it. I love popcorn!!

That’s a great idea to “eat with the alphabet.” I will have to think of that. I haven’t had my real favorite type of dessert in two days. It’s sort of killing me. But, I feel better!

  9. I’m a fast eater, too! I think that’s changed since becoming a mom. It’s like I barely have time to eat my own dinner, so I scarf it down.

Great idea about the popcorn, and congrats on getting to work with Pete!

Good luck with your goals!!!! I’ve been slacking on the water since I’ve been home from vacay :(

  11. Kia says:

Very cool that you will be working with Pete Cohen. Lots of ladies through these Mamavation parts have enjoyed their time under his guidance.

  12. Lindsay says:

I’m a scarfer, too :( I’ve GOT to slow down on my eating. I also totally understand your love of dessert. Very few nights go by when I don’t eat something sweet in the evening.

  13. Mary says:

That’s great advice about eating slowly. I never thought of that before. Good luck with your goals! I think I may have to try the drink between bites as well.

  14. Love the fork down between bites too, I have my husband doing that because he eats so fast! Pete Cohen very cool, you will walk away learning so much!
