Bearing Witness (Review & Giveaway)

Bearing Witness (Review & Giveaway)

It’s hard to think that others have suffered in the name of Christ. It’s hard because I often wonder if I’d have the strength, courage, and wherewithal to do it myself. Would I stand up and proclaim His name if challenged?

The collection of stories in Bearing Witness tells the true tales of people across time who have chosen to stay unwaveringly true to their faith while being persecuted, beaten, exiled, and often ultimately killed. Many of the stories are fit for a horror movie in the reality of how brutal the treatment was and is.

The first story is of Stephen, a newer disciple after Jesus’s death and resurrection. I was familiar with Stephen’s story and the fact that he was killed for his beliefs. But the way that Bearing Witness tells of his tribulations made the story easy and interesting to read.

The book continues on through early Christians and into early modern years. It ends with more recent stories of martyrdom and witness.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to care for Bearing Witness. I’m not very much interested in non-fiction, and I am certainly not one who enjoys reading about any sorts of violence. But the way that these stories are written make them readable and interesting. I’ve already told Math Man that he needs to read it next, and I’m making my list of friends and family who should borrow it when he’s done.
