Spooky Kooky Halloween

The Animal’s favorite holiday is Halloween. It’s up there on my top favorites list, so I am happy to oblige him with skeletons and ghosts and pumpkins galore.

This year, we started going a little bonkers with the decorations. Right now, we have a front porch that’s almost complete as well as a mantle that’s super cute and some other decorations around the house. We didn’t quite finish our Halloween tree, but I’ll share that with you in a couple of days — it’s flipping awesome.

What we’ve accomplished could have broken the bank if we’d allowed it to, but we have done our best to be as frugal as possible while still having heaps of fun. Here are my tips for having a spooky kooky Halloween without breaking the bank!

First, the kids made some really funny pumpkins. I found these at the Dollar Tree for – you guessed it – a dollar each. The entire face kit (there was a bat, Frankenstein’s monster, and witch) was only $1. Each little foam pumpkin was $1. Miss Sassy Pants and the Animal had fun (so did Mommy and Daddy).

We also decorated the mantle. My mother-in-law had given us a bunch of little fall and Halloween figurines. We just put out some of the cheap spider webbing and pulled it across our mantle and clocks. Then, I found a set of purple lights at Michael’s with a 60% off coupon (woot!), and we have something kooky! We love how one of the lights makes the little skeleton look super spooky.

Our porch is a work in progress. Every time we get ready to finish up, life happens. But, we took some construction paper and made a ghost face on our front door. Then, we used some black and purple flowers with skeleton picks in our planters. The Animal just loves the sparkly skeletons. We added in some $2.99 pumpkins from Aldi and some other figurines we had to fill up each side of the front door. (We had really cool spider webs on the brick – they fell down. I’m embracing the extra spooky.)

Right now, we’re working on a Halloween tree that will look both spooky AND kooky and cost less than $15 to make. Totally pumped, but again, life happens. I’ll update here and share with you once it’s complete! You won’t want to miss it.

  1. I’ve got decorations that I never remember to get out until it’s pretty much too late. Maybe we’ll do that Friday when the kids are out of school. I love your mantle. The purple lights are awesome!
