Summer Lovin’

Emiliano Zapata Summer Lovin’

It was spring when we met.
Phone calls, online chats, a blind date at Chili’s.

Two days before the first day of summer?
“Want to get married?”
“You know it!”
And it began.

A whirlwind of planning, moving, jobs, and babies.
And here we are 8 years later.

Please, God, just take them outside.
I have work to do, anyway.
Plus, it’s hot. I hate the hot.

After they fall asleep, we sit in silence.
Phones and laptops buzzing with updates.

We fall in to bed.
A quick “G’night” to seal the day
as we fall into a hurried slumber
fingers crossed that no one wakes in the night
to jolt us from the warmth of the sheets.

Glamorous? No.
It’s messy and loud and chaotic.

But when I look at you?
Muscles glistening with hot summer sweat
Chin covered in the perfect length of almost-gray stubble
Children using you as a human jungle gym?

Sizzle.
