Blessings of Unity (Review)

Four kids. Jobs. Coaching. Girl Scouts. Church. Life in general. When Math Man and I finally find time to be together, it’s relatively hurried and buried under the to-dos and chores. Deep conversations and reflections on our relationship and marriage have taken a back burner to the demands of our children and other commitments. But that doesn’t make the importance of our promise to one another any less important.

In The Blessings of Unity, Richard Case reminds us as married couples that the ultimate gift to one another and to the One who protects our marriages is unity.

Unity in decisions. Unity in prayer. Unity in commitment to one another and to a relationship with God.

The opening of the book holds a questionnaire to be answered individually about your marriage. You and your partner are asked about your opinions on your relationship as a couple, the ability to listen to one another, and your relationship together with God.

Math Man and I completed the questionnaire separately and then took a few moments to look at our answers. It was reassuring to know that both of us saw the same areas in our marriage that were very strong (for example, the willingness to talk things out when we disagree) and the elements that could be improved (like our specific walk with God as a couple).

In the remainder of the book, Case offers anecdotes, scripture and more to guide you and your spouse’s quest to find unity with one another and ultimately with God.

What I took from this book is that not every decision is easy, and not every decision comes to a mutual agreement. But what can occur is that every decision can be met with unity if we trust that God will guide us.

About the book:
The Blessings of Unity offers insight and ideas for creating godly unity in our marriages centered around two key concepts:
1) Abiding in the Vine and walking in the Spirit, and
2) Learning and applying the concept of unity.
Unity is achieved when a man and woman strive for agreement with God by processing His Will on every decision and in every issue. Through Biblically-centered discussions of discord, division, unity, discipleship, and prayer, and through exploring Biblical examples of unity, Richard Case offers husbands and wives practical and spiritual advice for working together in unity in the Spirit so that they can more perfectly present themselves to God for his divine approval.
