Blessings: Language Acquisition (Day 19)

how to purchase disulfiram Verse to ponder: Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. Psalm 127: 3-5

My boys are almost 4 (Animal) and almost 2 (Flash). It has only been in the last few weeks that they’ve really taken to hanging out with one another on their own (it’s lovely!) and having little conversations. I listen as the Animal encourages Flash to, “Come on!” and gives him support with, “Good job, Buddy!”

Now, when the Animal says, “Wanna go play in my room?” Flash answers with a very clear, “Yes,” and actually means it. Then they go, and they play happily sometimes for almost 30 glorious minutes.

Today, in the car after picking the Animal up from preschool, they had an argument. The Animal showed me that he got a cut on his hand. He showed it to his brother, and immediately Flash said, “Oh! A booboo!” The Animal said, “No, it’s a cut.” And Flash responded again with, “No! A booboo.” Their argument lasted at least 5 minutes. Even when I tried to interject with, “Well, a cut and a booboo are the same thing,” I was met with the Animal’s thoughtful query, “But is this a cut, Mommy?”

One of my absolute favorite parts of parenting is watching my children and their language acquisition. I love to see how they play with words. Even if it’s an argument over which word is best. Because when they are arguing – or maybe here we will call it discussing – they are thinking deeply about language without even knowing it. In that 5 minute time, both of the boys were filing something away in that section of their brain that will allow them to add more and more connotations to words as they get bigger.

What words do your children mix up or say in a cute way that you can’t help but smile about?
