Remove Permanent Marker: With Tea Tree!

Today was one of those crazy days where we decided to have a yard sale with two small fellas in the house. We took turns playing with them inside (it was really cold out there) and bundling them up to come out and play in the leaves (or really, we were chasing them and hoping they didn’t fall).

After lunch, Aaron came out to tell me that, “Um, the Animal got a permanent marker.” Appears we didn’t do a very good job of cleaning up all of our sign-making supplies, and the Animal thought it would be great to draw a picture of himself with permanent marker. He did, at least, grab a piece of paper. He also did, at least, drop to the floor of the kitchen to do it — not our nice new kitchen table or the couch or something.

But yes, there were several spots of permanent marker on our cream colored (so therefore obvious) linoleum kitchen floor.

So how in the heck do you remove permanent marker off of linoleum? I had to Google to find an answer, and someone suggested either lemon or tea tree essential oil. Because we are trying to avoid as many chemicals as possible when it comes to cleaning products and such, I decided to give it a whirl – especially since I have some really awesome oils on hand.

I tried lemon first. I love the way it smells, and I assumed that it would be a good place to start. It definitely did some damage, but I had to put a lot of elbow grease in as well.

So I decided to try cheap disulfiram Tea Tree next. And there’s the answer. About two drops, and I was on my way. I think the word that came to mind in that moment was, “Shazam!” Just like that, the permanent marker was off of my floor.

This has me super pumped. We didn’t use some weird chemical on our floor. I won’t freak out to have the kids playing down there, and now my house smells super clean. (NOTE: There was some oil residue, as would be expected, once I did this. To keep us from slipping all over the place, I used a dry paper towel to finish drying things up. No one slipped.)

Have you tried this before? What other awesome tricks with essential oils do you have up your sleeve?

  1. I’ve been doing some cleaning with the Orange oil I get from you. It doesn’t make cleaning fun or anything, but it does work and I feel good about not having as many dangerous chemicals in the house.
