When I Find Myself Singing

Shurugwi When I Find Myself Singing

Singing is my way of releasing stress and finding zen. Since having the Animal, I’ve done very little choir singing at church. I finally joined our church choir (after much pressure from the congregation – you know who you are), and I can feel that piece of my spirit rising again.

My kids are used to my songs. I have a song for almost any sort of situation, and Sassy Pants even recalls the times that we’ve had “musical dinners.” It’s exactly what it sounds like. Everything at the table is sung similar to Broadway musicals.

“Pleaaase, pass me the salt!”

“I neeeed a napkin, if you willll!”

Each of my children has a song I created especially for them. I spent a lot of time in a rocking chair with each of my babies, and it was inevitable that I would work their name in to a song.

We create parodies, I create music videos, and I catch myself singing lyrics simply because someone said a word and reminded me of that particular song.

Years ago, unless I was in choir, you wouldn’t have caught me singing anywhere but in my bedroom or shower. To have someone hear me sing was like letting that person into the most sacred part of my heart. Music moves me to tears, gives me chills, and often is my means of expressing my deepest emotions.

So when I find myself singing while cleaning — at the top of my lungs — and then turn to see my husband just grinning at me, it’s a good day. In the past, I would have stopped, blushed, and probably not sung again for a while. But this man? He makes me sing. He’s the joy in my step and the reason for this beautiful blended family.

What makes you sing?
